Modernism as a source of inspiration for the most romantic and imaginative designs. In the emblematic site of the Hospital de Sant Pau. The dream like architecture inspired me to create a collection of unique silk scarves.
Art, fashion and modernism blending in.
When you visit the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been a very enriching experience.
The beauty of the architecture of the hospital is impressive and full of superior quality details in stone, ceramics, bricks and glass. The appeal of it led me to devote my attention and paint some watercolors about it. Those were the basis for the design of future fashion scarves inspired by this monumental building, in line where fashion and modernism overlap to create stunning designs where light and color are the main interests.
Unbeatable and full of sensitivity, the design of this hospital allows to discover the world that combines with harmony the architectural beauty and the sanitary use. With an elegance rarely find in these types of establishments. Where rather prevails functionality and coldness hygienist.
Personally, it has been an endless source of resources that brought so many ideas allowing me to design several silk scarves with the humble intention of being, at least, at its qualitative and sensitive height.
The classical lanterns from a new point of view
Intensely what first catched my attention was the detail of the rose window of the central area in the main building. Where the light that enters through dances with the curved shapes of the stained glass. The yellow and blue colors create a magical combination with the curved roof of red brick and ceramics beautifully composed and executed. The symmetry octagonal glass composition suggests an extensive repertoire of motives that could be transformed into several designs on silk scarves. Which, starting from a classic line get transformed into attractive actual colors that give a sense of beauty and vitality to everyone wearing them.
From there have emerged a design for a square silk scarf on a classic style. With current colors combination out of the interpretation of the rose window in two colors variants. Blue and green, “Blue Lantern” and “Turquoise Lantern” of 90×90 cm and 135×135 cm.
The segmentation and selection of a part of the rose window is the excuse to design more dynamic scarves, more contemporary. Breaking with the rigidity and symmetry that an architectural octagonal piece like this one entails.
From this, “Feathers in the Wind” and “Wind feathers” came out. It’s fun to take the geometric repeated fragment from the lantern and give it movement in different ways. Playing with the design, shapes and colors to give a sense of fluidity and smoothness. As to what is normally the rigidity of the stained glass itself.
Sant Pau Roses – The elegant silk scarf
In one of the annexes to the main pavilion, much more humble but as interesting and important as the main building, there’s a ceramic tiles covering the whole nave destined for patients. For, basically, hygienic and aesthetic function, with floral motifs. The design of the tile, a white rose with green leaves and branches beautifully made, completely struck my attention. Expressing fashion and modernism in a single composition compacted into a piece that combined the functionality and aesthetics at the same time.
This inspired me to design a 200×68 cm silk scarf. With the same floral motif of roses and leaves, suitable for creating a two – completely different – ends scarf. Having two distinct level combination of colors. Perfect to use and combine with different looks and outfits and just one accessory. The three versions are:
Red Rose from Sant Pau. Where the red color and purple on one side balance out the beige on the other end. The intense tones shine on silk, giving it a very special touch.
Green Rose from Sant Pau. Blues and turquoise greens play as a background frame for the white and purple flowers.
Black Rose from Sant Pau. A silk scarf on grey tones with black and white shades on every end. Perfect for a fancy night out.
You can now, ENJOY THEM!
